TopoLogic Workshop

Digital Morphogenesis, evolving architecture through computation

Form finding and complex geometry experiments

Beirut – Lebanon, April 5th -7th 2012

Rhino - NURBS Modeling

A workshop where participants were introduced to strategies for the integration of digital tools not merely as a means of production but as an impetus of design

Intro:

TopoLogic Workshop  -  Beirut – Lebanon on April 5th 2012.

TopLogic was an intensive 3 days full time Workshop focusing exclusively on introducing Digital Morphogenesis, evolving architecture through computation, Form finding and optimizing complex geometry with parametric design tools in conjunction with economic efficiency, structural performance, environmental impact, and programmatic progress.

This workshop served as an introduction to the syntax and tools of evolutionary computation as well as an exploration of its influence on parametric architectural design.

This workshop focused on impacts of digital technologies on professional practice and services. It explored issues such as emerging forms of professional practice, status of professional knowledge and skills, use and value of digital information in design.

Introducing changing variables, either specified or random and through repetitive or iterative processing, design problems are created (scripted) explored and adjusted based on either internal or external logics or criteria.

At the end of the workshop each participant received an official certificate of participation signed officially by the related workshop collaborators universities and associations.

  Task and Objective

The main objective was to extract the information from the research as input in order to do experimental study to generate an adaptive eco- system as output, showing the design process, applying the new digital skills taught during the workshop.

In the evenings, participants did presentations demonstrating their experiments, research in computational architecture and engineering done in each day.

Participants used the software Rhino, 3dsMAX as parametric modeling software.

Scripting tools opened up the possibility to construct highly parametrical complex models.

In these 3 intense days, the participants learnt the workflow of basic scripting and parametric design throughout Rhino and Intro to parametric modeling of 3DSMAX.

Participants were introduced to strategies for the integration of digital tools not

merely as a means of production but as an impetus of design.

Exploring the exciting world of Digital Design, The workshop introduced participants

to Parametric Design strategies, highlighted issues of design, use of technology and

methodology from concept forms & shapes, through to complex engineering analysis.

Innovative tools for geometric modeling and scripting including minimal surfaces, mesh relaxing, tessellation etc.

Workshop Outline

The course explored advanced techniques in modeling to help participants better understand how to apply Rhino's modeling tools and 3dStudio Max in practical situations.

This workshop introduced participants to the features and functionality of Rhinoceros, the NURBS modeler, Mesh, etc….

In this comprehensive 3-day class the participants learnt to create and edit accurate free-form 3-D NURBS models. This fast-moving class covered most of Rhino's functionality, including the most advanced surfacing commands in both Rhino and 3dsMAX.
